Say knitting to a non-knitter and it’s bound to conjure up images of an old wooden rocking chair, a cosy fire and a woman with grey hair studiously knitting cardigans for her grandchildren. But with well-known faces such as Julia Roberts, Selena Gomez and Tom Daley (spotted knitting at the Olympics for the second time in a row!) picking up the needles, knitters everywhere are finally starting to see a shift in how the craft is perceived.
For years knitting has been used as a form of expression through clothes but in recent years we have also seen it used as artwork, activism and a supplementary treatment for mental health and chronic pain conditions. Like many things, we have Instagram to thank for sharing just how different knitting can look from the standard view of the craft.
Sheree Robinson, knitwear designer and lecturer, certainly doesn’t look like your standard knitter. At just 35 years old, with a unique and playful fashion style, Sheree is definitely bringing a fresh new look to knitting. I first met Sheree back in 2022 when we both took part in the Christmas jumper episode of Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas. She was the judge, and I was one of the contestants.
