Seasonal Celebrations: June
The longest days of the year and what to do with them
June is here. The fullest month of the year. Everywhere we look it feels as though life has exploded. The hedgerows are dripping in green leaves, the flower bed is bursting with colour and the new life of the spring has blossomed into health and bounty. This month is also the time we see the longest days of the year where daylight seems to last forever and nights are short with little break in birdsong and the noise of nature. There is so much richness in this busy time of year and so many opportunities for us to enjoy it. Here are some ideas for making the most of your June.
Summer Solstice
We must begin by looking towards the summer solstice. This year it will take place on the 20th of June. The word solstice comes from the latin solstitium which means ‘sun standing still’ an apt name for the longest day of the year. In some parts of the world, namely the Nordic countries, no darkness comes at all during this month. Even in our own country here in the UK, parts of Scotland will see a version of the midnight sun with traditional Celtic style fire festivals taking place in the Highlands and Islands to watch the sun barely set and then rise again in quick succession.
If like me you are unable to attend one of these fantastic celebrations there are ways to enjoy this day at home. Many people will take a late night walk and watch the sunset on the 19th of June or get up early to watch it rise on the 20th. It is also traditional to extinguish the hearth at this time of year and so many will light a fire pit in the garden to extinguish once the sun has set and relight when it rises once more. A more simple way to enjoy is to light a candle on the evening of the 19th and blow it out once darkness falls.
This is a time for reflection and gratitude for all we have in this life. To celebrate nature around us and to look forward with hope. Whatever you decide to do this summer solstice, take time with loved ones to enjoy the long warm nights and celebrate what matters in this life.
